Historia est magistrum vitae.
And throughout that history you continuously encounter the same contagion, ever and forever all known world was ruled by an inborn search for possession and wealth
Nor you, neither Holy Church are free and clean of Greed. So what a big deal to find out
how cruel and even more self-interested and
egoistic was the rule of Venetians in Cyprus (1489 - 1571).
Crushing the Dalmatian Pirates and becoming super power in Adriatic Sea,Venetian Republic became ever more important and
now could command the sea route to Holy Land, to supply the transport requiredby the crusaders. Reaping substantial profits and further trading rights.
After Third Crusade, Venice had trading settlements in Tyre, Sidon andother cities of the Levant.
But the city of Acre will fall to Mamlucs in 1291; agony and continues change of powerin the Kingdom of Cyprus, sitting young boys in power,
with even less powerful Supreme Court than in the holy city of Jerusalem, made third biggest Mediterranean island an attractive mid-point of trade.
Interest shown by the Milanese was than materialised by the Venetians, whose desire for Cyprus was inspired purely by profit.
The Venetians saw Cyprus primarily as a military base. Anticipating conflict,
they undertook an ambitious plan of fortification.
Famagusta and Nicosia were ringed with massive earthworks, cased with stone.
An outer wall was erected around Kyrenia castle, the gap being filled with earth
to form an artillery rampart. The best military architects in Europe were
brought in to design and execute these projects.
Ambitious plans concerned the construction of economically
important knots, such as bridges.
Prominent examples is so called camel route up in the Troodos Mountains
and construction of Bridges to enable transfer of copper ore from Para Pedi to
Paphos sea-ports.
